In Chinese folk Buddhism each of the twelve zodiac years is placed under one of eight guardians, and each guardian is written as a single Sanskrit syllable. That syllable is struck into the silver-plated bead. Avalokiteśvara and Amitābha share the syllable hrīḥ, so they share a bead — which is why seven beads cover twelve years. The cord is braided by hand and adjusts with a sliding knot.
